The Tides of March

I had thought that once January and February were over, the toughest times would be behind me and frequent cycling would happily resume in the gentle spring warmth. But instead of heralding the start of new adventures, March seems to be intent on breaking my spirit. For the past 3 weeks I've had pneumonia as a complication of my rib injuries, and I have no choice but to continue going to work in this state. Moreover, I've had to postpone my return to the US till the end of the month due to an unexpected project which will require exhausting travel. And to top it all off, the weather here has turned arctic and it has snowed 3 times during the past week.

The act of cycling is beginning to seem like a distant memory or even a figment of my imagination. I actually find myself looking at old entries on this website to reassure myself that it was all real. Oh cycling gods, deliver me from these trials and take me to the March I envisioned - with spring weather and a newly built up Sam Hillborne rolling along the New England countryside!

  2. I'm sorry to hear you're so sick, and especially in a time when you can't just back off from commitments and schedules. I hope you feel better soon!

I'm still struggling with the aftereffects of an awful cold, and the spring weather is the only thing keeping me biking. Unfortunately it's going to be raw and rainy all weekend I fear.
Wish you were here, where there are so many newbies brought out by the warm weather that it's almost inspiring a post on how not to be an annoying biker!
    Get well soon!

  3. I'm sorry to hear of your setbacks, particularly the pneumonia. But remember, cycling will be there when you return and forever after. This business of the moment is merely, well, of the moment.

  4. Pneumonia is the worst!

I wish you a speedy recovery and a safe return when it (eventually) comes... riding season will come soon, too :)

  5. That sounds awful - so much coming between you and spring rides, as if you're star-crossed lovers. I hope you feel better soon!

  6. Firstly, take care of yourself. Lung ailments are no joke. (said the guy with lifelong asthma)
Do what is necessary to keep yourself in good spirits.
That will help your health along.

April and clear weather will come soon enough. And the Berkshires will be just as lovely in May.

Have you decided how you are going to build up the Sam Hillborne?

  7. It's nature's way of telling you to not do strenuous cycling until your pneumonia has cleared up and you're strong in your wind and chest again. A real pest though as you were so looking forward to exploring Vienna on two wheels :-(. Hope you feel better soon - and that the weather does too.

  8. Feel better, dear. I had pneumonia five years ago and will offer that I was tired for about six months after it went away, so don't underestimate how much it can take out of you. I'm so sorry that you don't have more time to rest!

  10. Thank you all for the nice words. Everyone is permitted a dramatically despairing post now and again, so this here was such a moment : )

  11. Oh, Velouria. I'm so sorry to hear this. Having gone through pneumonia - it is no fun and dispiriting in itself. Your faded photograph is very sad. But you will get better. And very soon will be delighting us all with more lovely cycling adventures.
