Cycling and Flying

As mentioned earlier, I am leaving for Europe again and will return at the end of the month. My schedule will be very hectic this time, so there will be less posting. I want to thank everybody for reading, for the friendly messages, and for the helpful advice. If you've sent me an email and I have not yet replied, I will get to it as soon as time permits.

For now, here are some more gratuitous shots from our velo-travels. Appropriately, on our last trip we watched the airplanes land on Castle Island in South Boston.

If you click to enlarge this picture, you can see the cluster of tiny white lights in the distance - the airplanes waiting their turn.

And there one goes - landing right over the water.

People say that cycling feels like flying. Well, maybe if you are the airplane, but certainly not if you are sitting in one. I would rather cycle than fly any day.

See you soon!

  2. I'm a small plane pilot and cyclist. Piloting is far more about situation management and awareness; there's always so much going on. Cycling is more about the wind in your face and leveraging a feeble human power plant to go further and faster. That magic of efficiency is what makes cycling fun for me.

    Happy landings!

  4. I used to have dreams I was flying about 3' off the ground... when I ride I don't get them ;)

    Safe travels.

  13. I'm a sucker for photos of sunsets by bodies of water. The second photo in the series is one of my favorites of the genre, if you will. It's practically a pictorial definition of the word "aura." Or it could be the crown of a goddess.

Europe...lucky you. Enjoy your work and travels, and whatever you do, ride, take photos and write!

  14. Thanks to everyone for the nice comments!

Unfortunately, I am here purely for work and will be at work 8am-6pm on most days - so not much time for cycling or visiting any of my favourite places. I will still be making occasional posts though, so stay tuned!

  15. somervillain - LOL, no plans to buy any vintage bikes here. It is actually easier to find a nice one in Boston than here, plus time does not permit me to do things like that. The airline I flew does allow 1 bike as part of one's luggage allowance, but it must be packaged in an official bike box, which is both expensive and almost impossible to find. No make-shift boxes allowed.

Cap'n Unclefather - That's a no on taking one of my bikes as well. It is possible in theory, but just too much trouble, given that I will have almost no opportunity to cycle. I may rent one and go on a ride if I have a day with sufficient free time, and next Saturday I will be testing Retrovelos with Anna from Cycling is Good for You - should be fun.

  16. Cool, I can't wait to hear about your European adventures!

On the subject of bicycling and flying, I recently had a dream that I was flying my commuting route, just about rooftop level. I remember feeling smug that the cars could not reach me. So maybe all I need to really feel like I'm flying is safer bicycling infrastructure :)

  17. You are comparing riding a bicycle to passengering a jetliner. Try comparing it to piloting a hang glider or pre-1930 open cockpit airplane.
